New Take But Fitting Tribute to the Original
I grew up with the original series and have had seen a few re-launches of the show over the years. When the original series and the movies it spawned were over, I had seen enough - no tears shed over the series coming to an end. I liked the actors in the reboot that followed but there was no point to bringing it back at that point. All I remember about the latest relaunch was that the CGI was incredible, but that I wasn't really motivated to watch that take on the characters. Watching the behind the scenes documentary included with the DVD of this new movie gave me a real appreciation to the lengths that everyone went to capture the look and feel of the original. Why this was more interesting than a new series was that there wasn't the need to have a weekly commitment a series would require AND the fact that this one was the origin story/prequel to the family we got to know in the original series with a few differences. A plus was the addition of the source for Herman's brain which explains to a degree his "Dad" humor. Plus I liked how attracted Herman and Lily were to each other -- as if he was made just for her. Better than expected!
Well, I'm in the minority. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. WOW! set design and execution, great costuming, wonderful makeup design and cinematography. Daniel Roebuck as The Count (not yet Grandpa, as there is not yet an Eddie) was marvelous, Jeff Daniel Phillips tried hard and Sheri Moon Zombie was okay. Sylvester McCoy was a joy! Rob's script was better than I expected, but I sure wish he had let a really good comedy writer or two throw in their two cents (maybe some folks from BETTER CALL SAUL and BREAKING BAD--now, there is excellent comedy within a somewhat dark framework! Maybe Lester's head on a tortoise). In the commentary Rob talks about how hard it was to get the movie made, so kudos for what everyone was able to achieve. If Universal wants him to do a sequel, I hope he teams with a couple of other writers who love THE MUNSTERS as much as he does for the script. And Sheri and Jeff should step aside for really good actors (Sorry, but that's my opinion). I did enjoy the movie, and it's in my library now. Overall terrible movie. Why did they make it?
Mildly amusing with lackluster humor. Overall, al terrible movie that pays no homage to the original whatsoever. It was a good price for the movie and I had high hopes for it as I love the Munsters, but this movie is a one and done for me.
