Product Information

Devoted astronomer Dr. Ellie Arroway undertakes an emotional and spiritual journey after receiving the message she's waited for all her life--a mysterious signal beamed in from alien beings, who pass along instructions for building and piloting a craft that will presumably survive the passage from Earth to their home. While struggling to fund her mission, Arroway also struggles with her feelings about the nature of things, particularly after meeting a charismatic New Age believer who questions her disbelief in God. A deliberately-paced, meditative adaptation of the eponymous novel by Ann Druyan and "pop" astronomer Carl Sagan, who died during production.

Rare pro-Alien DVD
It's confusing on whether they want me to rate the physical DVD or the movie that is on it. The price and quality of the second-hand DVD was outstanding: less than $5 for a movie classic that I had missed and always wanted to see. As a SETI supporter, I liked the film but I suspect many in the general public would not be impressed. The film's portrayal of female (Jody Foster) ambition was great but it turns sour on bringing Carl Sagan's personal religious beliefs (or non-beliefs) into the picture.

Although this is a wonderful film, I exp...
Although this is a wonderful film, I experienced problems playing this Special Edition DVD on my relatively new Panasonic blu-ray player. None of the special features are accessible and I can't even bring up the main menu to select audio options, etc. When inserted into the player, the DVD immediately starts playing the movie.

Not quite sure what this means.
The movie is excellent. Moves well and the characters are interesting. In my opinion the ending is rather weak and rather silly considering the high quality of the rest of the movie. Maybe I will sit down at the computer and see if I can write a better ending. Chuckle.

Great movie. Good for kids too.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Understated performance by Matthew McCaughnahey. Had it on VHS that disintegrated over time.

It's all about the Jodie Foster
Her facial expressions alone had me fighting back tears multiple times throughout the movie, whether it was from overwhelming joy or sadness. God she's so great

A Must Watch Movie About space travel and ETs
Very good! DVD works great on my DVD player. An enjoyable movie indeed especially people interested in outer space travel and ETs.

Excellent
Excellent slow paced movie about first contact building up to a thoughtful, unexpected ending. Not heavy on special effects or action/violence. Sifi for adults. I found it excellent and a ending that will keep you thinking for days.
