  • Tough realism

Frankie aged 12 is on the cusp of adolescence. She feels odd and unconnected in a way that didn’t happen when she was a child. She is on the verge of making more adult discoveries. Left to her own devices she skitters at the edge of danger, not realising her own vulnerability. There are just 3 main characters, Frankie herself, her young cousin John Henry aged 6 and the redoubtable housekeeper Berenice who is with the children every day. Frankie puts a lot of wishful energy into feeling she could be part of her brother’s wedding., going away with him and the bride. Her main feeling of belonging comes from her empathy with her brother and his bride. Things don’t work out quite as she would have wished and there is some suspense right up to the end with a surprising ending. There are some beautiful domestic scenes where Frankie, Johh Henry and Berenice are at home together.
