A former Kansan's review of the movie "Picnic"
Some of this movie was filmed in my hometown (Salina, KS) in 1955, but I want to be objective about it. This movie was developed from a Broadway play, and I feel that most of the characters are developed in kind of a heavy-handed way that probably worked better on the stage than they do in a movie. The two actors in the movie who did the best at trying to tone that down and make their characters seem more believable were William Holden and Cliff Robertson. The people who made this movie did a good job with picking their locations for filming in Salina. The railyard scenes are in such an obscure spot that I had no idea where it was until I found a website with the information. The rich kid's house was easy. I know exactly where it is. As far as the DVD itself, the color and sound are great in this restored version. Just don't expect a realistic story, because it's not. It must be entertaining, though, because I've watched it several times in just the short time I've had it.
