Brothers Jin-Seok (Bin Won) and Jin-Tae (Dong-Kun Jang) come from a family whose unremitting struggle with poverty has led them to place all their hopes in Jin-seok, the younger of the two. His older brother Jin-Tae shines shoes in order to raise money to send him to university, while their mother runs a noodle shop; the patriarch has passed away, leaving the little family to fend for themselves. Their precarious aspirations are shattered by the outbreak of the Korean War, when Jin-Seok is drafted and Jin-Tae joins up as well, in order to work for his brother's release. He has neither the influence nor the financial means to send Jin-Seok back home; his only hope lies in the acceptance of dangerous missions that will earn him the Medal of Honor and his brother's release. Jin-Seok, however, does not understand his brother's intentions, and mistakes his valiant bravery for misplaced patriotism and greedy ambition, until finally and tragically he is confronted by the truth. WAY better than expected!
I am a avid fan of war movies, and being a senior I have seen every war movie to be released in the USA. I wanted to find some war movies I have never seen before, so I started looking for movies from other countries. Am I glad I did! This is the third war movie I have watched from Korea, and all were real good. The Brotherhood of war is a foreign war movie on par with Saving private Ryan [my all time fav]. There are many realistic and brutal battle scenes, all well staged and filmed, and the acting is first rate. It is about two brothers forced to go to war when North Korea attacked the south in 1950. Big brother vows to look after little brother, and does he have his work cut out for him! Based on a real battle, I never realized the losses that the South Korean forces took in the Korean war! US movies never show that. Obviously the movie is in Korean and has subtitles, but despite this the acting shines. You really care about these two brothers and the Brotherhood of war. See it!
