Product Information

When released theatrically in 1932, FREAKS was met with near universal disgust by critics and audiences alike, lasting in theatres for only a short time in the states and banned in England. The film stars Harry Earles as Hans, a suave midget who belongs to the sideshow of a seedy circus and who makes the mistake of falling in love with the beautiful Cleopatra, one of the "normal" circus performers. Learning that Hans is about to inherit a fortune, Cleopatra agrees to marry Hans even though she abhors him, planning to steal his money and get rid of him. When the freaks of the circus, who keep a watchful eye on Cleopatra, discover her scheme, they plan to exact an unforgettable revenge. Far more unsettling than Browning's best known horror film, DRACULA, FREAKS has long been neglected due to its subject matter, even though it is a genuinely effective film. Gripping and often creepy, FREAKS manages to humanize its main performers, even looking at them with a sense of awe. By contrast, the "normal" performers in the film are largely hateful creatures who turn out to be much more repellant than their deformed colleagues. Both an excellent horror film and a unique look at the lives of sideshow performers, FREAKS is a chilling movie whose final ten minutes are some of the most harrowing in all of cinema.

Freaks DVD
Seen the movie several times before. This is the first time I've been able to see the deleted scenes, commentary and interviews. I enjoyed hearing how the actors were happy to be able to work and earn a living and how they lived normal lives and enjoyed their day jobs. I'm so tired of hearing what other people think is "right for everyone!" The interviews and commentary allows these people to speak for themselves. Overall very interesting movie and again the information on director and actors is a plus!

1935 time capsule
The movie 'Freaks' is a capsule in time from 89 years ago. The underlying interests have changed little but the story uses deformed challenged people. Melancholy pervades but there is a curious attraction to the film.

Side Show
Ordered the dvd to play at a cast party for the Broadway musical "Side Show," which was about Browning, conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton, and several other actual characters. The film was a perfect complement for the party. Although the story line seems a bit hokey today, the dvd was excellent quality, well-packaged for safe shipping, and arrived in plenty of time before the estimated delivery date.

Interesting people
This movie is about people who were born different and did what they had to do to make a living. It shows the difficulties and struggles they faced as being called or tagged so called " freaks".

Banned Movie
`This is a 1931 B/W sound movie about side show freaks and their personal lives. It is a classic. I highly recommend it for anyone. Be sure to watch all the extras.

Great movie with actual people, not actors playing the parts.
it's interesting to see how groups of "like" stick together, no matter what. Also, it's interesting that this was banned in the United States for many years because of the nature of the film.

Great movie spotlighting the people of sideshow history
Fascinating look at the side show people from the mid-20th century. I've seen the faces elsewhere but this movie was a real eye-opener.
