Durante la Guerra di Secessione il soldato confederato Inman, dopo essere stato ferito in battaglia, decide di tornare a casa dalla donna che ama, attraversando una nazione lacerata dal conflitto. Nel viaggio di ritorno verso Cold Mountain e la sua amata Ada, Inman incontra pericoli di ogni tipo ma anche amici inaspettati. Nello stesso tempo anche Ada si trova a dover superare momenti difficili: vissuta fino a quel momento negli agi deve mandare avanti da sola e difendere la fattoria dopo la morte del padre. Solo grazie a Ruby, una eccentrica vagabonda, riuscirà a trovare la forza, il coraggio e la fiducia per far fronte alle difficoltà.
