What a triumph!" -Jay Winik , author of April 1865 and 1944 "A wild, page-turning history of one of America's most fascinating battles." -Brad Meltzer , bestselling author of The President's Shadow "Brian Kilmeade, who has a gift for narrative and an intuitive feel for great stories, has written an exciting account of New Orleans and how that battle changed America down the decades." -Jon Meacham , author of Thomas Jefferson , American Lion , Destiny and Power , and Franklin and Winston . From THOMAS JEFFERSON AND THE TRIPOLI PIRATES "A riveting book of history that reads as though it were ripped from today's headlines, and a must read for anyone seeking an understanding of the roots of U.S. foreign policy." --ADMIRAL JAMES STAVRIDIS (Ret.), former Supreme Allied Commander at NATO; dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University "This is a well-told tale, and there are lessons aplenty about both diplomacy and warfare--with useful application to the challenges the United States faces in our own time." --PROFESSOR LARRY J. Synopsis
In March 1836, the Mexican army led by General Santa Anna massacred about 200-250 Texans who had been trapped in a church in San Antonio for thirteen days. The devastating loss galvanised the surviving Texans. Under General Sam Houston, a maverick with a rocky past, the tiny army of settlers rallied. Just one month after the massacre, the underdog Texans soundly defeated the 'Napoleon of the West' (as Santa Anna styled himself) at the Battle of San Jacinto. Thanks to Kilmeade's storytelling, a new generation of readers will remember the Alamo., The heart-stopping story of the fight for Texas by The New York Times bestselling author of George Washington's Secret Six and Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates . In his now-trademark style, Brian Kilmeade brings alive one of the most pivotal moments in American history, this time telling the heart-stopping story of America's fight for Texas. While the story of the Alamo is familiar to most, few remember how Sam Houston led Texians after a crushing loss to a shocking victory that secured their freedom and paved the way for America's growth. In March 1836, the Mexican army led by General Santa Anna massacred more than two hundred Texians who had been trapped in a tiny adobe mission in San Antonio for thirteen days. American legends Jim Bowie and Davey Crockett died there, along with other Americans who had moved to Texas looking for a fresh start. The defeat galvanized the surviving Texians. Under General Sam Houston, a maverick with a rocky past, the tiny army of settlers rallied--only to retreat time and time again. Having learned from the bloody battles that characterized his past, Houston knew it was poor strategy to aggressively retaliate. He held off until just one month after the massacre, when he and his army of underdog Texians soundly defeated Santa Anna's troops in under eighteen minutes at the Battle of San Jacinto, and in doing so won the independence for which so many had died. Sam Houston and the Alamo Avengers recaptures this pivotal war that changed America forever, and sheds light on the tightrope all war heroes walk between courage and calculation. Thanks to Kilmeade's storytelling, a new generation of readers will remember the Alamo--and recognize the lesser-known heroes who snatched victory from the jaws of defeat., NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The heart-stopping story of the fight for Texas by The New York Times bestselling author of George Washington's Secret Six and Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates . Value was great... The condition was as described. Seller shipped item(s) promptly, dropped off at the Post Office same day as order placed/payment went through, though it took 3 days past the longer "expected delivery" date - thanks USPS. The items were in a bubble mailer only, no additional packing material.

  • Not well know exciting History.

Kilmeade brings History alive in another of his fine books. The struggles of Texas's independence from Mexico is a subject not taught much in school. Here it all comes alive.
