SynopsisAn instant classic upon its original publication in 1949 and winner of the first International Fantasy Award, Earth Abides ranks with On the Beach and Riddley Walker as one of our most provocative and finely wrought post-apocalyptic works of literature. Its impact is still fresh, its lessons timeless. With an introduction by Connie Willis When a plague of unprecedented virulence sweeps the globe, the human race is all but wiped out. In the aftermath, as the great machine of civilization slowly and inexorably breaks down, only a few shattered survivors remain to struggle against the slide into barbarism . . . or extinction. This is the story of one such survivor, Isherwood "Ish" Williams, an intellectual loner who embraces the grim duty of bearing witness to what may be humanity's final days. But then he finds Em, a wise and courageous woman who coaxes his stunned heart back to life and teaches him to hope again. Together, they will face unimaginable challenges as they sow the seeds of a new beginning. Praise for Earth Abides "One of the finest of all post-holocaust novels." -- The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction "The book has more thought-challenging elements than a shelf full of ordinary novels." -- The Christian Science Monitor, A disease of unparalleled destructive force has sprung up almost simultaneously in every corner of the globe, all but destroying the human race. One survivor, strangely immune to the effects of the epidemic, ventures forward to experience a world without man. What he ultimately discovers will prove far more astonishing than anything he'd either dreaded or hoped for. "From the Paperback edition."

  • Good for some

I read this book years ago. The story is mediocre but the additional comments are fascinating. They explain what happens when there are no people to maintain the infrastructure of the earth. For example, gasoline will soon not be available because the pumps use electricity to pump the gas from the tanks and the electric works will fail without people to maintain them. It explains the growth of plants destroying the roads, the death of zoo animals, etc. Quite interesting. It is considered a "cult" book now with many who have read it - re reading it. It may not be of interest to some, but quite an interesting play on what would happen if people were eliminated from earth except for a small few.

  • An old classic in brand new condition.

It was so much easier to read this new copy, than the old yellowed smaller format book that I've had forever. I like the size of this new book, the pages are bright white and the type is very legible. Great purchase.

  • Could you survive?

This is a thought-provoking book. Consider the situation. What if you woke up tomorrow morning and 50-60-70% of the population was gone. Or more? What would you do for food? Fuel? Transportation? The necessities? And what about other human beings? As you read it, think about it.

  • Small print and very wordy and not like new post apocalyptic fiction the I tend to read.

I skimmed the book but did not feel it was worth my time to read it.

Great story. I read this in high school 50 years ago and wanted to read it again. Enjoyed it both times! I’m going to pass it forward to my grandchildren to read.
