In New York City, Yussel Rabinowitz (Neil Diamond) trains to be a cantor. Although his father (Laurence Olivier) and wife, Rivka (Catlin Adams), don't approve, he also sings and writes songs for a black soul group under the name Jess Robin. When the group gets an opportunity in California, their leader, Bubba (Franklyn Ajaye), asks Jess to join them. Reluctantly, Rivka and his father let him go. In Los Angeles, Jess meets record company executive Molly Bell (Lucie Arnaz). Impressed by his music, she tries to promote him. However, Jess still struggles and is about to give up when Molly gets him a solo TV spot. Just as Jess seems set for stardom, Rivka and his father arrive to plead for his return.Samson Raphaelson's play about a talented singer's attempts to break away from a restrictive religious family was first filmed in 1927--when it became the first talkie. This--the third version--was made in 1980. Directed by Richard Fleischer after another director was dismissed, the film focuses on Molly's struggles to find opportunities for Jess, then on Jess's subsequent concert performances. Neil Diamond, The Jazz Singer
While this may not have been a huge hit when it was released, it still showcases some outstanding songs by a really gifted artist. While the plot may seem trite at times, it still gave the viewer some substance to follow the path of the main character. At times it seemed plastic in his portrayal, he still had tremendous feeling in his musical performances. The story lines of how some his hits came into being flowed really well and how "Love On The Rocks" specifically began many years before it was released after a failed attempt by a popular rocker of the day showed feeling and even a bit of humor when he got "fired". Lawrence Olivier gave a fitting performance as the Cantor Robinovitch and his eventual coming to terms with his son showed great personal feeling and believability. The Jazz Singer
Slightly grainy film converted to digital. It starts a little bit slow, but helps to develop the relationships between the characters. The music is excellent and the film shows why Neil Diamond was so popular in the late 60's thru the 80's. Great Movie, but needs better extras.
I'm a little disappointed that for a 25 Anniversary copy that there were not more extras. The extras I saw would have been found on any regular DVD. I also was hoping to find this movie on Blu Ray. IT’S THE ROCK SINGER AINT NO JAZZ IN THIS ONE
No Jazz and if you like Neil Diamond the songs are really nice. Diamond is good in his only acting gig. He preferred the stage and concerts. Lucy Arnaz is no thrill and Olivier is ridiculous as Father. He hated the film while making it and said so which the studio had to cover up. nice story line
The movie is really a modern-day remake of the original movie from 1927. That movie starred Al Jolson. At the time of its release, it was considered the first "talkie" movie. Great movie
