Synopsis
Modern Socialism is, in its essence, the direct product of the recognition, on the one hand, of the class antagonisms, existing in the society of to-day, between proprietors and non-proprietors, between capitalists and wage-workers; on the other hand, of the anarchy existing in production. But, in its theoretical form, modern Socialism originally appears ostensibly as a more logical extension of the principles laid down by the great French philosophers of the eighteenth century. Like every new theory, modern Socialism had, at first, to connect itself with the intellectual stock-in-trade ready to its hand, however deeply its roots lay in material economic facts. The great men, who in France prepared men's minds for the coming revolution, were themselves extreme revolutionists. They recognized no external authority of any kind whatever. Religion, natural science, society, political institutions, everything, was subjected to the most unsparing criticism; everything must justify its existence before the judgment-seat of reason, or give up existence. Reason became the sole measure of everything. It was the time when, as Hegel says, the world stood upon its head; first, in the sense that the human head, and the principles arrived at by its thought, claimed to be the basis of all human action and association; but by and by, also, in the wider sense that the reality which was in contradiction to these principles had, in fact, to be turned upside down. Every form of society and government then existing, every old traditional notion was flung into the lumber-room as irrational: the world had hitherto allowed itself to be led solely by prejudices; everything in the past deserved only pity and contempt. Now, for the first time, appeared the light of day, the kingdom of reason; henceforth superstition, injustice, privilege, oppression, were to be superseded by eternal truth, eternal Right, equality based on Nature and the inalienable rights of man. "The most brilliant as well as the most compact statement of Marxian socialism. The author's wit is as keen as his philosophy, and the volume possesses literary style as well as historical learning." -The Outlook "The body of this book is still fresh and striking." -Daily Chronicle "A brief presentation of the philosophy of socialism. Mr. Engels was the comrade and close personal friend, in war and in exile, of Karl Marx, and is therefore of all men the best fitted to give us the doctrine of socialism....This he has done in a very concise manner without being offensively dogmatic. He maintains that socialism became a science with Marx's discovery of the secret of capitalistic production, in the creation of surplus value; that it is no longer an accidental idea from this or that ingenious brain, but the result of the struggle between the two historically developed classes, the proletariat and the bourgeoisie; and that the socialistic state, in which the community is to own all the agents of production, is the inevitable outcome of social progress. Mr. Engel's book has the merit of greatly simplifying his master's statement of the case for socialism." -The Dial

- v***v (2081)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufAlthough this book was not as described, with no picture of it in the listing, the seller communicated well and quickly gave me a full refund while letting me keep it. The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate.
