Synopsis
In 1863, as the War Between the States creeps inevitably toward its bloody conclusion, former Kentucky slave Britt Johnson ventures west into unknown territory with his wife, Mary, and their three children, searching for a life and a future. But their dreams are abruptly shattered by a brutal Indian raid upon the Johnsons' settlement while Britt is away establishing a business. Returning to find his friends and neighbors slain or captured, his eldest son dead, his beloved and severely damaged Mary enslaved, and his remaining children absorbed into an alien society that will never relinquish its hold on them, the heartsick freedman vows not to rest until his family is whole again. A soaring work of the imagination based on oral histories of the post-Civil War years in North Texas, Paulette Jiles's The Color of Lightning is at once an intimate look into the hearts and hopes of tragically flawed human beings and a courageous reexamination of a dark American history., From the Author of the National Book Award Finalist News of the World "Meticulously researched and beautifully crafted.... This is glorious work." -- Washington Post "A gripping, deeply relevant book." -- New York Times Book Review From Paulette Jiles, author of the critically acclaimed New York Times bestsellers Enemy Women and Stormy Weather, comes a stirring work of fiction set on the untamed Texas frontier in the aftermath of the Civil War. One of only twelve books longlisted for the 2009 Scotiabank Giller Prize--one of Canada's most prestigious literary awards--The Color of Lightning is a beautifully rendered and unforgettable re-examination of one of the darkest periods in U.S. history., From the Author of the National Book Award Finalist News of the World "Meticulously researched and beautifully crafted.... I got 4 books from this seller. One was wrong book (same writer, simular covers) which, when you order used books several at a time from big used book warehouses, this happens every now and then. Seller contacted me and refunded within a couple hours on the same business day. These people do business right. The 3 others were just as described, packed perfect. Shipping was on time. Good books at good price and a seller who does business right. I highly recommend this seller and the items I ordered.

  • A Great Book!

Paulette Jiles, author of "News of the World", is an excellent writer. The "Color of Lightening" is in my view her finest work. Jiles tells a story about a black civil war veteran who starts a freight hauling business in West Texas. While away from home, Comanches raid the local settlement killing several and capturing his wife and two children. The book describes the father's efforts to locate and ransom his surviving family members.

  • I never know what to say to this.

This book is based on several different people's stories, during the 1860's & 70's time period. It's not a "Western", it's about people that lived in the West. It was very interesting. I've read one other book by this author & I'll buy more. She has a easy reading style, similar to Laura Ingalls Wilder.

I have read all of Jiles books. This one is very well written, but not quite as good as her others.
