Synopsis
THE BELOVED #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER--FROM THE AUTHOR OF HANG THE MOON The extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, "nothing short of spectacular" ( Entertainment Weekly ) memoir from one of the world's most gifted storytellers. The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette's brilliant and charismatic father captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn't want the responsibility of raising a family. The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered. The Glass Castle is truly astonishing--a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family. The memoir was also made into a major motion picture from Lionsgate in 2017 starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts., Now a major motion picture from Lionsgate starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts. MORE THAN SEVEN YEARS ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST The perennially bestselling, extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, "nothing short of spectacular" ( Entertainment Weekly ) memoir from one of the world's most gifted storytellers. The Glass Castle is truly astonishing--a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family., Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an "excitement addict." Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever. Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town -- and the family -- Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home. What is so astonishing about Jeannette Walls is not just that she had the guts and tenacity and intelligence to get out, but that she describes her parents with such deep affection and generosity. Hers is a story of triumph against all odds, but also a tender, moving tale of unconditional love in a family that despite its profound flaws gave her the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms. For two decades, Jeannette Walls hidher roots. Now she tells her own story. A regular contributor to MSNBC.com, she lives in New York and Long Island and is married to the writer John Taylor. Although this book was not as described, with no picture of it in the listing, the seller communicated well and quickly gave me a full refund while letting me keep it. The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate.

  • Up For a Downer?

The writing is good in this book. It is well structured. It provides a stunning picture of this writer's life as a child. My problem is with the content. I could only read a few pages before I became so upset and angry at those parents that I had to put it down. It was recommended to me by a friend and she said it got better so I stubbornly plowed on until the finish. But it ruined my days until it was over. And the "better" part came in the last chapter. These selfish, lazy people who wouldn't work but were above government programs that at least would put food in their four children's mouths should have been prosecuted for the way they treated their children. The writer was brave to have put it all on paper and I wish I could give it a better review.

  • Disfunctional family

Since I was also born in WV, I had to read the book. I admire Jeannette for her talent in putting this into book form. My daughter was recently reading this on her ipad. My family was also dysfunctional, but not to the level Jeannette's was. I've thought of writing about my family's beginnings, but it would have to be in the fictional book section. No one would believe it was real.

  • Book

The book was in the condition described. About the contents of the book,I read this book many years ago and I wanted to shout READ THIS BOOK to every body that came into the store. At that time I worked in a Major book store. The book is fantastic, one of my favorites. I laughed and cried. If you are from or live in AZ. you will easily recognize the places mentioned. I can't say enough about this book, it is so we'll written.I hope the up coming movie does it justice!!!!!

  • I couldn't wait to read more.

At first I thought maybe it was missing some emotion or just something more, but it is a story of the author's life, that was indeed missing a lot. So sad that anyone would have to live this life. I found myself at times, liking her father for the ways he tried to create special moments but then moments later loathing him. A very good read, had a hard time putting it down when I needed to.
