Such fortitude comes in handy when she discovers that her trusted guardian, Callum, has been hiding a devastating secret from her: the Were that killed her parents is alive, he's building a small army by attacking and turning children, and his actions have essentially been condoned by the Senate, the ruling council of Alpha males. Joining forces with the Rabid's latest victim, a teenaged Were with whom she feels an immediate, almost primal, bond, Bryn sets off to exact vengeance, not just for her loss but for the loss of innocence experienced by each of the turned children. Stubborn to a fault and not one to back down from a challenge, Bryn certainly makes her fair share of missteps, rendering her charmingly sympathetic if slightly irritating. Her tricky relationship with the pack is part of the appeal: her affection towards certain pack members is entirely genuine, and yet she must constantly remind herself of the potential violence they represent. Although the wolves here are less creepy than those in Pearce's Sisters Red (reviewed below), Barnes takes care to make it clear that these lupines are ruled by a pack mentality that values brute force, dominance, and survival by any means necessary. Interestingly, however, the Rabid is terrifying not because of his animalistic nature but more for his sadistic, and seemingly human, need for unnecessary violence.
