WWII fighters that helped win the war!
My father-in-law won 3 Distinguished Flying crosses, 7 Air Medals, and a Presidential Unit Citation while flying the P-47 off Corsica, and his squadron shortened Mussolini's Axis War Machine's capabilities by a month by taking out a 125 acre fuel dump on the Po River, and a lot of convoys and infrastructures as well. He even took on Romel in El Alamein, before moving on and kicking butt in Italy. And about this airplane...It is similar to the TBM Avenger in the Pacific...Always in the shadow of another Fighter, the P-51 and F4U! And their pilots not getting near enough credit for their heroism and skill in the WWII arenas in these two lumbering Flying Meat Grinders! Other than that! It is a good read and the details of the squadrons and paint jobs that their pilots placed on their birds! Like Joyce's Joy and Joy II after the first one got the crap shot out of it and had to be scrapped after limping back to base! Dad told me that no P-51 could take the beating that the P-47 could with its air cooled rotary engine...The Merlin engine in the P-51 were water cooled and a single bullet in the engine would finish the P-51 for that day! Dad had 8 cylinders shot out and he still landed it, bunged up, but landed nonetheless!
