Archbishop John R. Quinn takes a look at the problem of excessive centralization in the Catholic Church-a problem acknowledged by theological giants such as Yves Congar and Joseph Ratzinger. Using the Eastern Churches as an example, he suggests a return to truly traditional structures as the solution to the problem. In this book I deal with the fact that the Church from its very beginning thought of itself as a communion and then I treat of the development of the great historic structures of communion: synods, patriarchates, and councils.
