The mighty Mississippi has been vital to the survival of Americans since before the arrival of white settlers. But even a benevolent force can sometimes turn. In 1927, the Mississippi River swelled to overflowing, and flooded hundreds of towns. When it was over, some thousand people were dead, and nearly a million were left homeless. In the midst of this natural destruction, the Percys, a family of white aristocrats in Greenville, pitted themselves against the black majority in an effort which deepened the racial tensions in the area.
