Synopsis
This volume makes available for the first time in English translation over a thousand texts written between the fifth century BC, and the fifth century AD, of curses inscribed on stone tablets from North Africa, to England, and Syria to Spain. A substantial introduction supplies the full cultural, social and historical context to the ancient Graeco-Roman practice of cursing enemies and rivals by writing an incantation on a tablet and dedicating it to a god or spirit. The selected translations, arranged thematically, are fully annotated and accompanied by extensive commentary., In the ancient Greco-Roman world, it was common practice to curse or bind an enemy or rival by writing an incantation on a tablet and dedicating it to a god or spirit. These curses or binding spells, commonly called defixiones were intended to bring other people under the power and control of those who commissioned them. More than a thousand such texts, written between the 5th Century B.C.E. and the 5th Century C.E., have been discovered from North Africa to England, and from Syria to Spain. Extending into every aspect of ancient life--athletic and theatrical competitions, judicial proceedings, love affairs, business rivalries, and the recovery of stolen property--they shed light on a new dimension of classical study previously inaccessible. Here, for the first time, these texts have been translated into English with a substantial translator's introduction revealing the cultural, social, and historical context for the texts. This book will interest historians, classicists, scholars of religion, and those concerned with ancient magic., In the ancient Graeco-Roman world, it was a common practice to curse an enemy or rival by writing an incantation on a tablet and dedicating it to a god or spirit. More than a thousand such texts, written between the fifth century BC and the fifth century AD, have been discovered in places ranging from North Africa to England, and from Syria to Spain. Until now, however, there has been no English translation of these tablets and indeed the texts themselves have remained virtually unknown. This volume makes these fascinating texts available for the first time. A substantial introduction supplies the full cultural, social, and historical context for the texts. The selected translations, arranged thematically, are fully annotated and accompanied by extensive commentary. Reflecting a wide range of social occasions, including lawsuits, love affairs, business competition, and horse-races, the tablets open a window into the hearts and minds of ordinary people, shedding light on a dimension of classical society in which historians today are increasingly interested.

- e***e (10)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufShipping a Britannica set coast to coast is not easy, but the seller did an excellent job. First, the books were carefully cleaned. Then, they were wrapped in plastic in pairs, then wrapped again into cubes. They were then surrounded by several layers of heavy foam sheets, and placed in stout cardboard boxes. The post office tried their darndest to destroy one of the three boxes, but all of the books arrived in perfect condition. I definitely recommend booksforbrainsllc. - b***0 (600)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufOrdered book on 4/30 contacted seller 3 days later to confirm shipping & again 2 days later. No response. Filed claim with eBay for refund, seller finally shipped book one day before eBay intervention. Almost 3 weeks to get book. Never bothered to contact me to explain, apologize, nothing. Not only a violation of eBay policy, but really unprofessional & inconsiderate. eBay really needs to start policing sellers like this. Will not buy from this seller again!Fredericksburg!
