Alcoholic has-been actor Frank Elgin (Bing Crosby) is given one last chance to make a comeback--and save his relationship with his frustrated wife Georgie (Grace Kelly)--when Broadway director Bernie Dodd (William Holden) offers him a starring role in a new musical. Based on the stage play by Clifford Odets, director George Seaton's deeply moving adaptation is driven by the powerful performances of its three leads and garnered seven Academy Award nominations, including a win by Kelly for Best Actress. The film was remade in 1982 with Dick Van Dyke and Faye Dunaway.

Grace Kelly Steals the Movie
Excellent script, outstanding performances by the cast, a great old movie superior to anything being put out today. Grace Kelly, in her well deserved Academy Award winning role, steals the heart of the viewers from veteran stars Bing Crosby and William Holden. I'm not a big Bing Crosby fan, but he does an amazing job in the portrayal of his character. And the ending, is so right.

IT HAS A GREAT ENDING. SHE STATES IN THIS MOVIE THAT ALL SHE WANTS IS FOR FRANK ELGIN TO BE ABLE TO STAND ON HIS OWN TWO FEET AGAIN AND HE DOES! IT'S NOT THE USUAL GLAMOROUS ROLE THAT GRACE KELLY USUALLY PLAYS.....REFRESHING!

Grace Kelly is usually regarded as beautiful, and Bing Crosby as an excellent singer. but they are rarely numbered among the greatest actors of all time. This film is the exception. Both are cast against type. Kelly isn't glamorous and Crosby isn't likable. He's a weak, manipulative, alcoholic has-been actor. She's his stressed-out wife who comes across as grim and demanding. Their child died after being hit by a car. Frank (Crosby) feels responsible and, over the years, has reacted by avoiding all types of responsibility. Now that he has a chance for a Broadway comeback, will his wife push him to success, or push him over the edge?
