This super fast processor provides six cores, 12 execution threads, and a base clock speed of 3.46 GHz boosted to 3.73 Ghz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology 1.0. Superb advanced technologies ensure efficient and cost-effective operation, with Intel Hyper-Threading delivering two processing threads per physical core to get more work done in parallel, and the Intel 64 architecture delivering 64-bit computing by allowing systems to address more than 4 GB of virtual and physical memory. The processor maintains power conservation through the use of C-state Idle States, and Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology, which switches voltage and frequency based on the processor load.

This Intel core i7 processor is the top of the line i7 CPU. It runs the best. I have used lesser CPU's in i7 and this one out performs them.

Oldie But Goodie
It took 10 years before I was finally willing to pay for the highest performance CPU for my x58 motherboard. I replaced an i7 first gen 950 with the 990X. Yes, I'm using a 10-11 year old computer as my primary system. I'm not a gamer but I work with a lot of programs simultaneously and I do video editing. I upgraded to a 980 ti Invidia GPU at the same time. Upgrading to the 990X was the first time that I personally installed a CPU. I did some research on CPU removal and installation and went for it. I've been running the 990X for about a month. This processor works as great as I expected it would. The 990X is reliable and it easily handles all of the tasks that were previously performed by the 950. I'm content with my setup and see no real reason to buy a "modern day" system. It took 10 years before I was finally willing to pay for the highest performance CPU for my x58 motherboard. I replaced an i7 first gen 950 with the 990X. Best upgrade for a 12 year old pc
The ultimate upgrade for x58 platform PC and gets your computer on par with low performance chips of today (6 cores, 12 threads and can be OC'd to 4.5 GHz easily).

Old Warhorse Almost Runs with the Young Colts
I bought this because I wanted to get a power boost from my old X58 LGA1366 motherboard (An ASUS P6T SE). I was upgrading an i7-930. You can find the the i7-990k used for $290-$600 (and even more!) on EBay. (They sold for $1000-$1500 when new). My I7-930 had a Passmark (PM) rating of 5,200. The i7-990x PM=9,200, and this is a very noticeable increase for the $300 I paid. Keep in mind that the i7-5820k sells for $380, plus a $200 motherboard gives you PM=12,000, about 30% faster and you have a motherboard with new technologies like SATA III and USB 3.0 or 3.1. An i7-4790k (PM=11,000) costs about $320, is a little faster and only uses 80 Watts vs 130 W for i7-990x or 140 W for the 5820. My i7-990x overclocks to about 4.2 GHz (from 3.4 GHz stock), so it will perform with some of the ... This is a 6 core processor, which is primarily good for rendering of cinematic creations, and there is other engineering software which takes advantage of 6 cores. However for gaming and many other tasks a 4 core processor that runs faster (like the new Skylake i7-6700k PM=11,000) will perform better. Another consideration is the i7-4790k and i7-5800k motherboards will let you use your old DDR3 memory. The i7-6700k requires new memory. If I had to do it over, I would get an i7-4790k, pay $100-$200 for a new motherboard, and re-use my old memory.

Top performance from a past era
Fired right up no issues. After some initial testing decided on a modest OC which is also handles nicely. This was the last upgrade I could possible do for my PC
