A famous French trio of plays and movies known as The Marseilles Trilogy or The Fanny Trilogy.
This is a classic French love triangle from the 1930's. Set in Marseilles, there are four major characters and numerous secondary ones that depict ordinary working class life among people living in a harbor city. First, there's Marius who loves a girl named Fanny, with whom he has grown up. But Marius also loves the sea and yearns to set sail and find adventure all over the world. Then there's Fanny herself, facing hard decisions when Marius leaves her to start his adventures, but unknowingly leaving her pregnant. Next, there's Panisse, a 50-year-old widower whose dream of leaving his business to a son can suddenly be realized as he offers Fanny marriage and Fanny's unborn son a name. And finally, there's César, Marius's father and Panisse's friend, who willingly keeps the secret surrounding Fanny's pregnancy, as long as he can become a loving "godfather" to his grandson. But several years into the marriage Marius returns. Then what?
