The Great British Fish Out Of Water Crime Drama
Death In Paradise is the series that shows the police force in action on the small Caribbean Island of Saint Marie. The series starts with the murder of the existing Detective Inspector, chief officer of the Honore' police, and the arrival of his British replacement, D.I. Richard Poole. Poole is a prototypical British detective, unwilling to bend his principles in an alien environment. Much of the lighter side of the series comes from the character attempting to bend the environment to suit himself, rather than adjusting to his new world. The first half of the first season always has someone pointing out how he must be insane to refuse to wear anything other than his wool suit, and his commenting on how there must be a deity passing out punishment to him for dropping him somewhere without fog, rain, or actual seasons. The police force maintain a basic premise throughout the series - two street officers, a detective sergeant who primarily serves as a foil to the detective inspector, the inspector running the unit, and the police commissioner who is more concerned about Saint Marie's public image than the realistic crime figures. With at least one murder every episode to solve, the range of skills presented by the characters is as entertaining as their personal stories and quirks. This series maintains a degree of lightheartedness that is refreshing to see among the other BBC crime dramas, and still maintains scientific truths and methods that could rival some of the methods used in more advanced settings. If you enjoy the early days of Hawaii Five O's original series, and a well told story of someone emotionally reserved trapped in a culture of freedom and hedonism, you will enjoy this series.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Neu
