One Year After by William R. Forstchen
This is a really good book, in a different way from the first in the series, One Second After. The first book was both realistic and very emotional in its depiction of the disastrous effects of an EMP on the delicate infrastructure of America. This book is less realistic and more entertaining, in a way. Unlike the first book, which focused on a narrow slice of the world, this book begins the opening up of a wider viewpoint, with some really excellent character development and plenty of people to love and hate. While the POV of the characters is not quite at the "big picture" level yet, it's paving the way, I think, for the third and final (?) book to develop a true world view.
It's immensely enjoyable and a compelling read which details the best and worst in the people involved in the struggle for survival. It's also thought-provoking, as the likelihood of this actually happening gets more possible every day. I know it's turned me into a "prepper!"
