Product Information

Dr. Frank Bryant (Michael Caine) is an alcoholic professor of literature headed for dire straits. Rita is a frustrated young housewife filled with wanderlust. When the two meet as student and teacher, no lecture hall can contain their attraction for one another. As Rita engages her teacher in a fuzzy romance, she matures and discovers a new side of herself, but in the end she must choose either her marriage or the magnetic Dr. Bryant. EDUCATING RITA reunites director Lewis Gilbert with star Michael Caine--they previously worked together in the 1966 drama ALFIE--and once again their collaboration is staggering. Bryant's shortcomings as a drunk and a womanizer are detestable, yet still Gilbert allows viewers to empathize with his character. In EDUCATING RITA, Gilbert once again demonstrates that he is not only a master of commanding the camera but a master at deconstructing the human heart as well.

A Masterpiece of Acting
This movie could justifiably be considered a masterpiece of acting. Both Michael Caine and Julie Walters are at their best here, in a timeless story of a May-December mentoring relationship. While aging professor Michael Caine is succumbing to the bottle and his own pathos, a much younger Julie Walters is taking a chance that becoming a student at Open University will bring meaning to her restrictive life. The encounter and the passage of time changes them both, and the ending is distinctly bittersweet. Directed with compelling highs and lows for the main characters. It won multiple major awards for best actor and best actress for Caine and Walters, and was nominated for three Academy Awards. A movie you will want to rewatch and remember. Consider it for an addition to your movie collection !

Tempus transit, sed ars sempiternum est
In a word, nostalgia. Younger viewers, meaning those who didn't see it as a first-run feature in a movie theater, will find it charming: Ms Walters and Mr. Caine were terrific and they may find that parts of the film stay with them long after their first viewing. But for me, it's a bit more, like visiting friends you've had for a long time and have grown old with....

Uplifting.
They make good movies these days. That I will not deny. If you like Michael Caine, however, you will love his character and this movie. The story hits hard and is relevant today. Some things change, some never do, just the trappings. This is a get off your behind and do it tale. Awesome rocket fuel for changing your circumstance and knowing that what you are is valuable beyond measure.

Julie Walters and Michael Caine at their Best!
I saw this movie when it was released. For the last few years, I have scanned the internet to buy a copy of the movie. Most DVDs were either way overpriced or didn’t play in the United States. This buy for me was perfect and I enjoyed the movie more than when I originally saw it.

An updated My Fair Lady
This is a charming film that touches on working class life in the UK, feminism, love, and self-discovery. It is funny and engaging, and you'll be cheering Rita to find a "better song to sing."
