    7 Coen films at a good price. Thought provoking, partly theatrical films, focusing on force of character.

    7 Coen Brothers films for a little over £4. Missing are Fargo & No Country For Old Men. However, The Big Lebowski & The Hudsucker Proxy are here. These films have Hollywood budgets & stars, but are partly art house. To some degree, the entertainment component of these films seems to rely on the ability of the cast to go beyond the script in expressing their characters, and this factor is not consistent across the 7 films. There are often large-scale art deco sets, and other, darker influences from the mid-20th century. There is also a focus on moral character, force of character, sense of purpose, and how these come into play when individuals with different goals interact. However, there is little obvious political point-scoring, or clear-cut moralising, and this leaves the audience with a lot of food for thought. One of the less opaque movies is The Big Lebowski, provided that the audience is aware of the comparison being made between Lebowski and Raymond Chandler's private eye, Marlowe. We see Lebowski encountering many of the same situations in LA as Marlowe 60 years earlier in The Big Sleep and elsewhere. However, whereas Marlowe was an energetic knight-errant who sought to control events, Lebowski is a self-centred, lazy pacifist who's content to be bullied by stronger characters, as long as he gets what's his. We are also told that Lebowski is a man of his time, so it is clear that the Coens are gently commenting on the decline in moral character, particularly in LA, between the 30s and the 90s.

    macabre humour

    Great, with its macabre and ironic sense of humour. Bought this for a 'Coen brothers' study day. Modern day resemblance to some film noir.
