This abridgement of the world's most authoritative dictionary of ancient Greek is based on the 1883 revision. It includes some discussion of word usage, citing examples and characteristic phrases. Generally speaking only words used by late writers and scientific terms have been omitted from the full lexicon. The Authoritative & Complete Greek - English Lexicon From Classical Attic Greek Through New Testament Koine Greek A Must For Your Library
I write this review from the perspective of study in The New Testament Greek alone. Though Liddell & Scott's Lexicon go beyond that scope. For over forty years I have been translating with various Greek tools. This Lexicon is a demanded study companion with the five volume set: "A Patristic Greek Lexicon" by Lampe. Between them you will own the most comprehensive compilation of works that are a primary interpretation of theological vocabulary. Together these lexicons draw upon each other as far as possible in Christian thought. Beginning with the sub apostolic age, Lampe embraces all words in the development of New Testament thought. The relation to Liddell & Scott's works require special attention and interest when The Patristic Lexicon that does not include such words. Liddell & ... In fact, in order for you to succeed in the lexical study of The Patristic Lexicon you must own Liddell & Scott's Lexical studies. You will only realize this if you own both. They are an assumed pair on your desk. In fact, The Patristic will give heavy attention to what Liddell & Scott have to say when delving into detailed specifics for a word. Liddell & Scott is definitely scholarly and professional. It hones in on ecclesiastical terminology with great accuracy and acumen. I strongly rely on these publications for my studies on Christian Theosis. Something I have been studying for about thirty eight years. A topic sorely lacking in The Western Christian thought. Interestingly enough, I have tracked the omission of critical words relating to Christian Theosis in most every Christian ( Western ) publication. A key discovery while tracking Theosis related words is the omission of the personal "oi" pronoun contained within certain Greek words related to Christian deification. The way The Lord treats this move within us is dealing with our disposition. Not some kind of position. This isn't Greek mythology. However, in The Patristical Lexicon united with Liddell & Scott's Greek - English Lexicon these words are recovered and come to life for Christian experience into Christ. This is an extremely critical discovery and recovery for Christian growth in the life of sanctification. Within these pages there is no embarrassment or owed apologies when in dialog about Christian deification. The proof is in The Text of The Old & New Testaments backed by the combination of Liddell & Scott and The Patristic Lexicons. With regard to Etymology, Derived words, Compound words all parts are covered in all Forms with quality understanding, leaving no room for doubt. The only thing left lacking would be your prayers and a good study partner. The print is well established consistently throughout. It is of manageable size and weight for a medium size text. Excellent Greek-English Lexicon
An absolute must for students studying Ancient Greek. The intermediate size is perfect for reference, though it is a bit heavy to carry to and from class. That said, I believe the hardcover is much better than paperback for a book of this size. I recommend buying used, as the contents of the book haven’t changed much since their publication, and there are plenty of gently-used copies in circulation.An absolute must for students studying Ancient Greek.
