Synopsis"If you don't have the time to read, you don't have the time or the tools to write."In 1999, Stephen King began to write about his craft -- and his life. By midyear, a widely reported accident jeopardized the survival of both. And in his months of recovery, the link between writing and living became more crucial than ever.Rarely has a book on writing been so clear, so useful, and so revealing. On Writing begins with a mesmerizing account of King's childhood and his uncannily early focus on writing to tell a story. A series of vivid memories from adolescence, college, and the struggling years that led up to his first novel, Carrie, will afford readers a fresh and often very funny perspective on the formation of a writer. King next turns to the basic tools of his trade -- how to sharpen and multiply them through use, and how the writer must always have them close at hand. He takes the reader through crucial aspects of the writer's art and life, offering practical and inspiring advice on everything from plot and character development to work habits and rejection. Serialized in the New Yorker to vivid acclaim, On Writing culminates with a profoundly moving account of how King's overwhelming need to write spurred him toward recovery, and brought him back to his life.Brilliantly structured, friendly and inspiring, On Writing will empower -- and entertain -- everyone who reads it.

  • A good read

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book by Stephen King. He gives a lot of good advice about writing in an interesting way. In the first part of the book he talks about his earlier years, which is extremely interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone, writer, would-be-writer, or just an interested reader.

  • King's view on writing

Great book on writing by one of the best contemporary authors in America. King's memoir section is also interesting for any King fan. This book really inspires one to let "the guys in the basement" out and begin writing.

  • Stephen King in a whole new Light

As an aspiring author, reading how a great like S. K. got his real (as in childhood on up) start was enlightening, encouraging and downright entertaining. I heartily recommend this book.

  • Much better than expected.

There is excellent advice in this book. Normally this book new costs $25.00 so this was a great value as well. Originally had this as an audio book, but I wanted a physical copy to reference back to. I was very happy with this purchase. I highly recommend this book!

  • Buy this book

Casual and hardcore fans as well as anybody interested in writing should own this. It's a great reference and contains everything you need to know to write books. It's also probably the closest thing there will ever be to an autobiography from King. Some of it is instructional but it's told in a compelling and entertaining manner. I've read it three or four times

  • Condensed and to the point about how to think About Writing

Stephen King gives us a snapshot of his early life as a writer with great humor and simplicity. That intro, not truly an autobiography, provides a background to understand how he thinks about writing and his own work habits. He writes with great humility and knocks, where appropriate, pomposity about the ART of writing. He doesn't like the formal structures such as plot and outline, preferring his own organic story "situations."

  • Great book!

This is one of the best books I've ever read. Yes, it's written for writers, but Mr. King's stories draw you in and make you really respect his journey toward becoming the writer he is. It's a wonderful guide for those of us who like to dabble with the written word, even if we never plan to publish our work. Insightful, straightforward advice on writing. Loved it!

  • Not worth the price.

I do like Stephen Kings novels, but I am not especially enamored with this book. The first part, a mini-biography, is fine but not especially interesting. The core of the book - the writing on writing - is also interesting, but not particularly instructive. To be honest, this sounds like a recording of Mr. King giving forth on things that interest him. Fine, as far as it goes, but his (studied) laconic and I-dont'-give-a-fuck-what-you-really-think become tiresome and, sorry to say, a bit tannoying. Sorry, Stephen. Love your books. The rest? Not so much.
