Additional Information
Anno Domini: the seventh year of Augustus Caesar's reign. In the Roman province of Judea, Jews return to the city of their birth for the census. A bright star in the night over Bethlehem marks the birth of Jesus Christ. Years later, Roman commander Messala (Stephen Boyd), who was brought up in Judea, takes command of the Roman garrison in Jerusalem. His Jewish boyhood friend Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) greets him. Messala is delighted. But when Judah refuses to name Jewish patriots, Messala sentences him to the slave galleys and imprisons his mother, Miriam (Martha Scott), and sister, Tirzah (Cathy O'Donnell). Judah vows revenge. In BEN-HUR, William Wyler's much-lauded epic, the story of Judah's search for his mother and sister and his quest for revenge intersects with crucial biblical events such as the Sermon on the Mount and the crucifixion. Wyler gets fine performances from Heston, Boyd, Jack Hawkins (as a Roman admiral who befriends Judah), and Hugh Griffith (as an Arab sheik who dreams of racing his beautiful white horses against Messala). Among BEN-HUR's vivid dramatic sequences are a violent sea battle and the famous chariot race that pits Judah against Messala in one of cinema's great action sequences.

    Worth a view

    This is one of my favourite films, reminds me of being a kid again. From my perspective, it is well produced and unsurprising that it was such a hit in its day. The quality of the copy I bought was/is excellent, no jarring or jumping. The story, although fictional has one thinking that all it portrayed may well have happened as I think years ago many of us believed it to be a true story.It's the ideal 'rainy day' film, worthy of a screening in the cinema still, but I doubt many youngsters would go to see it these days, even though it contains all the elements of a modern film: great story, great scenes, wonderful staging and costumes.

    Upsetting for my mum

    Brought this as a gift for my mum old copy not playable. DVD good condition. Casing looked like it had been chewed up by a dog. Mum got a bit upset 75 don’t like to see my mum upset. May seem trivial to you

    Can't beat the classic movies

    Love the movie as I also like classic movies too. Had to buy a new dvd as my previous one had scratch issues. Lol. Anyway lockdown brought on a bit of nostalgia so I'm glad I was able to watch again

    ONE OF THE BEST FILMS EVER MADE.

    Far better than the recent re make, which in my opinion is rubbish. This original film is one of the all time classics.
