Warren Wiersbe describes J. Sidlow Baxter as "one of the greatest Bible teachers I have ever heard. His approach to the Scriptures has had a lasting effect upon my own life and ministry. I have recommended Explore the Book in pastors' conferences and in the seminary classroom. It is an excellent survey of the Scriptures, and every serious teacher and preacher of the Word ought to work his way through these studies." Since these 147 studies were first delivered by J. Sidlow Baxter as his Thursday evening Bible lectures in Charlotte Chapel, Edinburgh, without thought of being published, they are somewhat conversational in tone. Baxter notes that though he quotes from such as A. T. Pierson, Sir Robert Anderson, G. Campbell Morgan, and the Pulpit Commentary, this course (intended to be read ... Warren Wiersbe describes J. "We shall let each book tell us its secret and open its heart to us." Baxter honors the Bible as the inspired Word of God. "Therefore, we are seeking to learn, under the illumination of the Holy Spirit, the mind and the truth and the will of God." "Our Lord Jesus Himself has taught us that HE is the focal theme of all the Scriptures; and everywhere, there, we want to see beyond the written word, to Him who is the living Word. And we want to see Him in such a way as causes us to love and trust Him the more. . . . True Bible study will encompass that object, for the inspired pages of Holy writ live and thrill and glow with the presence of God!" As a serious Bible student, I have owned a copy of this book (first published in 1960) for several decades. I purchased this one on eBay because it was reasonably priced with the thought of giving it to someone who will value it as the treasure that it is. Volume 1 - Introduction and Genesis to Joshua Volume 2 - Judges to Esther Volume 3 - The Poetical Group: Job to the Song of Solomon; The books of the Prophets; Prophecy and the Prophets; Isaiah to Lamentations Volume 4 - Ezekiel to Malachi Volume 5 - Inter-Testament period; New Testament and Old; New Testament as a Whole; Four Gospels Collectively; Matthew to John Volume 6 - Acts of the Apostles; Church Epistles Collectively; Romans to Revelation Each volume retains its own page-numbering system with its individual Table of Contents, showing the number of lessons devoted to each book of the Bible. For instance, each book of the Pentateuch is covered by four lessons each. Four lessons are devoted to the Inter-Testament Period. The book of Revelation is covered by one lesson. Each volume concludes with a page of questions for either testing or further study.

Explore the Book says it all.
Warren Wiersbe, noted pastor, author and former president of Moody Bible Institute once said, (Paraphrasing) " If I were stranded on a desert island and could have but two books, I would have my Bible and Explore the Book by J. Sidlow Baxter." Wiersbe was absolutely right on! This is the best Bible survey book ever published.

Outstanding resource
I have used this book for years as a primary aid to Bible study. Baxter offers keen insight and summary charts that provide the theme and flow of each book of the Bible. I bought this copy for a a prisoner who has become a student of Scripture.

I bought this as a gift for someone because the book is outstanding and a tremendous blessing! Overview of each book of the Bible, but much more than a simple overview. Full of Spirit-taught insights. Can't say enough positive things about it.
