SynopsisIn Dhalgren , perhaps one of the most profound and bestselling science fiction novels of all time, Samuel R. Delany has produced a novel "to stand with the best American fiction of the 1970s" (Jonathan Lethem). Bellona is a city at the dead center of the United States. Something has happened there.... The population has fled. Madmen and criminals wander the streets. Strange portents appear in the cloud-covered sky. And into this disaster zone comes a young man-poet, lover, and adventurer-known only as the Kid. Tackling questions of race, gender, and sexuality, Dhalgren is a literary marvel and groundbreaking work of American magical realism., In one of the most profound and bestselling science fiction novels of all time, Samuel R. • Dhalgren is the Greatest SF novel of the past 50 years

In my opinion, Dhalgren is the most important science fiction novel of the past half-century - and possibly the most important novel, period. Delany deals with everything important in our society in these so-called "modern" times: Racism; Homophobia; Sexual experience in all its varieties; what Art is and does and where it comes from; traditional or so-called "dominant" society versus "fringe" alternatives, and how each of those societies see and reacts/interacts with the other; Capitalist greed versus, or compared to, communal, "clan" or so-called "gang" values and societal structure; Music, Poetry, and creativity; The Media and "mainstream" religion as dominating, controlling and punishing entities. The above list does not cover everything Samuel R. Delany tackles in the nearly-900-page behemoth - which I have read 8 times since discovering it a number of years ago.
