Synopsis
Of all the ships human beings have constructed to navigate the waters of the world -- from a hollowed-out log sharpened at both ends to modern ocean liners weighing thousands of tons -- those powered by the wind are among the most interesting and beautiful. In this classic review, noted maritime artist Gordon Grant has created 80 magnificent line illustrations of some of history's most important sailing ships, beginning with a graceful Egyptian galley (c. 1600 B.C.) and ending with a splendid five-masted clipper ship of 1921. Also depicted are a Roman trireme, a Viking longship, a sixteenth-century caravel, an East Indiaman of 1750, an early nineteenth-century brigantine, a New Bedford whaling bark, and dozens of lesser-known vessels, among them the galleass, carrack, buss, and flute. Henry B. Culver, well-known authority on naval history, has provided a detailed, meticulously researched text for each vessel, describing the materials and details of construction, how the ship's design matched its function, the period in which the vessel flourished, romance and lore surrounding the craft, and more. Naval historians and model shipbuilders will value this work as an excellent sourcebook and reference with much information on the evolution of sailing vessels, the origins of shipping, customs of the sea and other pertinent matters; sailing enthusiasts will find it a wonderful browsing book, offering an informative, handsomely illustrated look back at 3,000 years of sailing history., Superb, authoritative history of sailing vessels, with 80 magnificent line illustrations. Galley, bark, caravel, longship, whaler, many more. Detailed, informative text on each vessel by noted naval historian. An EXCELLENT transaction! All five books arrived in "LIKE NEW" condition, pointing to the integrity of this seller because the books were not listed as such but I was sure this seller would be a good one. Speedy shipment and super secure packaging. First time buyer of "Stuff from Sally" with plans to come back. Integrity matters; THANK YOU!!!

The TY Rabbit I purchased is as described. It was shipped with other items I bought from this seller, which all arrived safely and a timely manner. It is a brand new item and came with original packaging and all of the tags. I am happy with all of the things I bought from this seller and will buy from her again. Thank you!

Thank you! Shipped well. Packaged exceptional! As described, actually it was in "as new" condition. My opinion; quite pricy for a pattern (including shipping) compared to pattern shopping, but I purchased it anyway.

  • A Book Not Excelled

This book was first published in 1924, I believe. In 1926 the "Wanderer", the last square rigged whaling bark out of New Bedford Massachusetts was driven aground on Cuttyhunk Island, also in Massachusetts. Thus ending the historic New Bedford whale fishery. This all occurred about a decade before Eric Newby's "The Last Grain Race". I remember as a little boy watching a report on television about the last square rigged sailing cargo ship, the "Pamir" foundering off the Azores, just a few weeks before the surprise launching of Sputnik. When this book was written, sailing ships were not quite extinct. The task faced by the authors was formidable. Often the same type of ship has several different names, in different places. Often the same name was applied to different types of ships. ...
