SynopsisIntroduction by A. N. Wilson * Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic Wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Tolstoy's genius is seen clearly in the multitude of characters in this massive chronicle--all of them fully realized and equally memorable. Out of this complex narrative emerges a profound examination of the individual's place in the historical process, one that makes it clear why Thomas Mann praised Tolstoy for his Homeric powers and placed War and Peace in the same category as the Iliad: "To read him . . . is to find one' s way home . . . to everything within us that is fundamental and sane.", Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic Wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. I am not qualified to review a classic such as "War and Peace". However, I can tell you that the paperback I received from this company was in more than good shape. Though the confirming email stated that there might be underscoring, highlighting, and dog-eared pages, the cover, spine and pages were in pristine condition. This particular edition is an older translation, much easier to navigate than the heavily-footnoted newer translations that are laden with footnotes and do not translate a lot of the French within the text, making it very cumbersome to read. I am fully satisfied with this purchase and would recommend this publication and edition for anyone who just wants to kick back and enjoy one of the best novels of all time.
