  • Decent But Could Be Better

Very roughly speaking, in Minutes 1-4 Guangzhi Xing (GX) and some students talk about the benefits of tai chi; Minutes 4-7 GX demonstrates a version of the 8 Brocades of Silk as a warm-up (he does not name the moves); Minutes 7-17: a Front View Competition Form demonstration with some comments; Minutes 17-53: In-Depth Instruction; Minutes 53-61: Rear View demonstration; Minutes 1:01-1:11 Side View demonstration; Minutes 1:11-1:22 Front View demonstration that seems to be just a pick-up of Minutes 7-17 minus the comments. In the In-Depth Instruction section, GX breaks the form's 73 movements down into about 23 unequal sections with some sections having 6 movements or more and some having 2 or 3. Generally speaking it is a nice DVD. My criticism? GX names only some of the moves; he does not name them all. One movement, Leisurely Tying Clothes, appears many times in the set, but I don't recall its name being said once. The oft-repeated two movements, Opening Hands and Closing Hands, I don't believe are named but are at times referred to as "Recharge". If I used this DVD to learn the form, I would have to compare the DVD to a standard list of movements in the form, figure out where they fall on DVD, sort it all out and then, finally do as Guangzhi says, "Follow Along." After the instructional part of the DVD, there are about 8 Previews of other products produced by the publisher, which I did not watch. So, it's a decent tape but could be better. It is very competitively priced. I enjoyed watching it and will probably watch it again.
