"While the particular details of rod and gun are always prominent, more often than not it is the social bond, the passing on of tradition that is the abiding subject of these essays. . . . Editor Kenneth L. Untiedt and the Texas Folklore Society have produced another fine annual volume, as eagerly anticipated as the opening of dove season or an early morning fishing trip. Readers who are interested in these matters should not let this one get away."--Southwestern Historical Quarterly, "While the particular details of rod and gun are always prominent, more often than not it is the social bond, the passing on of tradition that is the abiding subject of these essays. . . . Synopsis
What would cause someone to withstand freezing temperatures in a cramped wooden box for hours on end, or stand in waist-high rushing waters, flicking a pole back and forth over and over-in many cases with nothing whatsoever to show for his efforts? Why is it that, into the twenty-first century, with the convenience of practically any type of red meat or fish available at the local supermarket, we continue to hunt game and fish on open waters? The answer is that no matter how sophisticated we think we are, no matter how technologically advanced we become, there is still something deep within us that beckons us to "the hunt." This desire creates the customs, beliefs, and rituals related to hunting-for deer, hogs, and other four-legged critters, as well as fish and snakes, and other things that perhaps aren't physically alive, but capture our interest as much as the prey mentioned above. These rituals and customs lead to some of our most treasured stories, legends, and practices. This volume of the Publications of the Texas Folklore Society includes serious, introspective articles on hunting and fishing, as well as humorous tall tales and "windies" about the big ones that got away-all lore that reminds us of that drive that calls us to become predators again., No matter how sophisticated or technologically advanced we become, there is still something within that beckons us to "the hunt." - i***j (140)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufQuality was as described. Good condition for a used book. Exactly what I was looking for. Selling price was fair given the market prices for books in this series. Seller shipped promptly but US Postal Service was slow in delivering, not fault of seller. Packaging was excellent and protected the book in transit as well as preventing damage from the US Mail carrier who stuffed it in our mailbox, with other packages, instead of bringing packages to the door. I am very satisfied.Astracts of the Minutes of the Court of Pleas...: Rowan County, North Carolina (Nr. 135427629962)
- e***l (19)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufA very good and efficient transaction from start to finish. Shipping was quick and on time. Packing was good and protected. The yearbook was exactly as described in the details. Based on my research I believe that it was a good value. I would use this seller again.1968 Saga. - i***a (260)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufThe seller inaccurately described the book as having a few small creases in the corners. The book was shipped and arrived very securely and well-packaged; however, the entire right edges of the pages of about a quarter of the book itself were severely bent and warped, clearly something which occurred pre-shipping. I believe I can get the pages flattened by stacking weights on the book over a prolonged period of time, but the seller’s description is very inaccurate.Olliff Family History: Descendants of John Shears Olliff - Bulloch Co., Georgia (Nr. 135608418977)
