Surprising, dark, complex
I bought the DVD when a friend said that it was the current favourite of her 13-year-old daughter. She is autistic and it had been suggested as a means of helping her come to terms with difficult life issues, facing hope, disappointment and grief, but processing such emotions effectively. I found it a rather surprising film — quite dark and complex, but addressing the underlying subject with a clever mixture of fantasy and cold reality. The characters are very believable and the acting excellent, with superb effects. The monster is well portrayed as he explains the paradox that people and things are not always what they at first seem to be. Well worth a watch, and probably at least one repeat to gain a better grip on the ideas and issues involved. It is also well worth watching the ... Unusual but enjoyable
I first saw this film at the Showcase and loved it. I am a senior person who enjoys different plots and found this a very entertaining film. There is a good moral to this storyline and may not be fully grasped by all younger ones but the graphics, although may be found scary at times are extremely well done. All young ones like to be afraid at times and this is a great film to do just that. Definitely worth the little money I paid. I think I enjoyed it even more the second time at home even without the thrill of the cinema atmosphere.I first saw this film at the Showcase and loved it. A lesson in letting go
This book is about one little boy whose emotions are all over the place when he finds out that his Mum is dying of cancer and his own Dad and Stepmother do not have any room for him. He finds out how strong he can be through his dreams when a monster calls and through the monster's stories he can eventually let his Mother go. He and his grandmother learn to live together without her daughter/and his Mother. You will definitely need hankies for this film.This book is about one little boy whose emotions are all over the place when he finds out that his Mum is dying of cancer and his own Dad and Stepmother do not have any room for him. Worth watching
Found this a thought provoking story. Didn't really enjoy Sigourney Weaver's acting in this, the boy is very good and, I hope, has a long enjoyable career in acting. Special effects are also good.

I enjoyed 'The BFG' and thought this might be a similar tale.
I could not have been more wrong. This is a very different beast altogether. It is dark thought provoking and yet surprisingly up lifting. The acting, production values, direction and plot are all top notch and why this film did not walk away with an arm full of awards is beyond me. A must watch but have a box of tissues handy and although rated as a 12, I recommend watching it first before you show it to children.I could not have been more wrong. This is a very different beast altogether. It is dark thought provoking and yet surprisingly up lifting.
