SynopsisStirring reflections on the human condition provide a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman warrior and emperor of the 2nd century., One of the world's most famous and influential books, Meditations, by the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (A.D. 121-180), incorporates the stoic precepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in A.D. 161, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor's own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct, this eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one's personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of inevitable pain, loss, and death -- the suffering at the core of life -- Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one's control and a focus on one's own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of the classic George Long translation, this updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century but also offers today's readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life., Stirring reflections on the human condition from a warrior and emperor provide a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the 2nd century. Recognizing that suffering is at the core of life, he counsels stoic detachment in the face of inevitable pain, loss and death.

  • This book has changed my life.

This book has changed my life, and has made a huge impact on my ability to handle stress. The author is a personal hero of mine, and this repository of ancient wisdom is as relevant today as ever! I have been active duty, first responder, and now a city bus driver. I use this book and the knowledge within as a calming influence.

  • Not an easy read but well worth the effort

I was genuinely looking forward to to this collection of thoughts for a variety of reasons. I wasn't expecting the literal translation that arrived. I suppose it's preferred for accuracy in the telling, but it would find greater popularity if some literary license were taken to the extent that it read more like a contemporary novel. The wisdom remains however and there is much to learn from one of the last "Great", Roman Emperors.

  • Amazing book

This book boggles the mind-amazing to think that it was written in 177AD. The author was a very insightful and wise, but humble person.

  • Inspirational reading.

Marcus Aurelius --one of the great and good emperors of Rome. His commentary, thoughts, and meditations. Good inspirational reading. This issue is a rather cheap binding---that is OK. I purchased it to read --not to collect. If it falls apart in six months or so, I do not care (can not beat the price!). What is written is still great.

  • Useful, pithy insights into human troubles.

This dude had lots of real life good insight into troubles and stuff and made practical, useful sense out of the obstacles, problems, and human nature he endured, it's what we all experience and he said it quite clearly in his writing. Very good advice.

  • Meditations ancient book

Marcus Aurelius never ment this to be a book for the ages, but it is! Stream of thought style and in no particular order, just pick a page and read for 10 minutes. It will change your life, or at least your current mood.

  • I highly recommend this book.

Great book. Marcus Aurelius seems to have been a great emperor and human being, very much on a philosophical and spiritual path. Very inspiring!

  • Short book

Not at all what I expected. It was recommended in a book I read and the author said EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK

  • Such wisdom!

Proof that universal truths remain so through time. I am very impressed with the meditations. It is a dense book, I read a little then think about it awhile before continuing. Impressive and relevant.
