Synopsis
Throw off the shackles of formal schooling and embark upon a rich journey of self-directed, life-long learning. After over 100 years of mandatory schooling in the U.S., literacy rates have dropped, families are fragmented, learning "disabilities" are skyrocketing, and children and youth are increasingly disaffected. Thirty years of teaching in the public school system led John Taylor Gatto to the sad conclusion that compulsory governmental schooling is to blame, accomplishing little but to teach young people to follow orders like cogs in an industrial machine. He became a fierce advocate of families and young people taking back education and learning, arguing that "genius is as common as dirt," but that conventional schooling is driving out the natural curiosity and problem-solving skills we're born with, replacing it with rule-following, fragmented time, and disillusionment. Gatto's radical treatise on public education, a New Society Publishers bestseller for 25 years, continues to bang the drum for an unshackling of children and learning from formal schooling. Now, in an ever-more-rapidly changing world with an explosion of alternative routes to learning, it's poised to continue to shake the world of institutional education for many more years. Featuring a new foreword from Zachary Slayback, an Ivy League dropout and cofounder of tech start-up career foundry Praxis, this 25th anniversary edition will inspire new generations of parents and students to take control of learning and kickstart an empowered society of self-directed lifetime-learners. John Taylor Gatto has been a fierce advocate for self-directed "guerrilla" education for decades. He is also the author of Weapons of Mass Instruction and The Underground History of American Education ., With over 70,000 copies of the first edition in print, this radical treatise on public education has been a New Society Publishers' bestseller for 10 years Thirty years in New York City's public schools led John Gatto to the sad conclusion that compulsory schooling does little but teach young people to follow orders like cogs in an industrial machine. This second edition describes the wide-spread impact of the book and Gatto's guerrilla teaching. John Gatto has been a teacher for 30 years and is a recipient of the New York State Teacher of the Year award. His other titles include A Different Kind of Teacher (Berkeley Hills Books, 2001) and The Underground History of American Education (Oxford Village Press, 2000)., With over 70,000 copies of the first edition in print, this radical treatise on public education has been a New Society Publishers' bestseller for 10 years! • Hard hitting critique of modern school systems

If you're wondering why schools don't seem to get better despite the investment of time and money, it's possible that you're just not aware of what the purpose of the school is, and why that is often the antithesis of what most folks commonly believe the purpose should be. This book discusses the specific philosophies, and throws in some anecdote from the author. It id not technically one continuous writing, but a collection of essays/speeches that the author gave over a period of time and after his 30 years in the education system. It makes controversial claims in that if you believe that the way we should educate children is by trusting "professionals" so that your life and time can be freed up to do other things, the stark reality of what is actually going on in school will require ...

  • Inside public school - story collection of essays.

This book makes an excellent introduction for anyone who is involved in education in any way. It lets the cat out of the bag on why school reform doesn't work. - Find your own way out! "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free"

  • If you have kids, or plan to have them in the future, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK.

Essential reading for any parent considering entrusting their children's education to a government approved school, public or private. Thought provoking, informative, and extremely upsetting to those of us who are/were "educators" in the system, by exposing how, albeit unwittingly, we processed thousands of kids through our system, and accomplished the mission of Dumbing Them Down. One of the best parts for me was that education, when considered as an art, is less like painting (where material is applied to a blank canvas to produce a beautiful image) and more like sculpture (where excess material is removed to reveal the beauty that is already inside the piece of granite)

  • Eye-Opener

This is one of those books that provide insights into what is really happening under the surface. Such insights allow us to make better decisions through greater knowledge. Nothing could be more valuable.

  • Necessary information

More tax paying adults need to read this book. Money spent on buildings--sport facilities--administration--sure isn't helping the young to learn & retain their knowledge.
