  • Life and Toil on the assembly Line

Excellent personal account of what working on the GM assembly line during the 70's was really like. The author puts you inside the head of the human robots who toiled the night shift in a constant battle to beat the clock and at the same time remain sane in spite of the often ludicrous demands of management who had not a clue of what "life on the line" was like. The author explains how generational tradition drew him into the chasm of the life as a factory worker and how he became a "Rivethead" in spite of an inner conflict to leave. Once you start reading it's a book you can't put down as you gain an insight into why the US auto industry during the 70's began to decline as the mental anguish of auto workers increased. A great book well worth reading.

  • somewhat interesting

GM production line parts are Interesting and writing style was infringing at first but got a bit tiresome over the course of the book. (it was on the NYT's best book list after it first came out) but I found all the many stories about excessive drinking and use of drugs tiresome and off-putting, He spent way to much of the book writing about his writing career which was not all that interesting. I can see why his career did not continue on it's up where trajectory.
