One of the Best!
I have always recommended the book How To Draw Caricatures by Lenn Redman to aspiring caricaturists. Tom Richmond's The Mad Art of Caricature covered new areas and offered many additional insights. It is a treat looking through the fantastic illustrations and feeling the wheels turning in your head as you have those "Ah ha!" moments while reading each new segment. Although I don't think it can completely replace Lenn's book, they should definitely be a set!I have always recommended the book How To Draw Caricatures by Lenn Redman to aspiring caricaturists. Cartooning and drawing in general have been a lifelong hobby for me and at age fifty-five I have an extensive collection of books on the subject that could rival the Barnes and Nobble art section. This was one book I somehow missed when it came out in 2011. A quick skim through the book revealed it to be undoubtedly the best instructional book on caricature I have ever seen. The book contents page lists: 1) What is Caricature? 2) Basic Caricature Theory, 3) Head Shape: The Alpha Shape, 4) Drawing and Caricaturing the Features, 5) Caricaturing the Rest of the Head, 6) Beyond the Face, 7) Drawing Live Caricatures, 8) Caricature in Illustration, 9) Caricatures and Mad, and a conclusion and afterword. Tom Richmond's illustrations and techniques show a mastery of the subject matter and a ... His work has been published in numerous publications and an array of media types including MAD magazine. I would put work right up there with MAD magazine's Mort Drucker in his skill level. The book breaks down a complicated process into a few basic and repeatable steps. He shows how to analyze facial features and detect which ones are the prominent feature that make a personality pop out. There are examples of anatomy including skeletal structure, muscle and tissue structure that reveal shape, examples of exageration of the same subject to show different approaches, and finished works of recognizable celebrities, each with a discussion of why the illustration works. The 170 page book consists of mostly full color examples with about a quarter being black and white illustrations with wash and tone shading. A sample of chapter two includes: The five basic face shapes, three basic relationships in caricature, simple variations, classic human facial proportions, and using negative space to exaggerate features, among other topics. Some subjects illustrated were multimedia celebrities like: The cast of the TV series "Lost," Steven Spielberg, Daniel Craig (and all the Bond men), Harrison Ford, Conan O' Brian, Hugh Laurie, Steven King, Tom Cruise, "Hulk" Hogan, Albert Einstein, Tom Green, Lucille Ball, Prince Charles, Scarlett Johansson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tony Bennett, David Letterman, Ozzy Osbourne, Clint Eastwood, Leslie Nielsen, Jack Black, and a many, many more. Most of these are finished illustrations and not a step-by-step, but the process is laid out in the book. In my opinion, this is really the best book on caricature and a great value to anyone who wants to get into caricature. It's really that good.

It's a good book for beginners and advanced artists.
It's a book that explains what caricature drawing is. It goes into how to look at faces to draw them. And the different parts of the face, then explains the different ways to draw the eyes, nose, mouth, and other features of the face. It's a good book for beginners and advanced artists.

Great source for caricature carvers.
Very detailed book. I've just started to get into reading it. Some of the information I have heard before but it's a good reminder. This book was recommended by a woodcarver to me as a way of carving wood caricatures. I believe this will come in handy for coming up with my own designs.

Excellent resource-the best I've found.
I was amazed at how detailed and in-depth this book is. Tom Richmond covers the art form in meticulous detail, even explaining the underlying body structures. This is not a casual, light treatment. I find it to be a very slow read because there is so much information packed into these pages.
