Synopsis
The 2025 edition of Warship , the celebrated annual publication featuring original research on the history, development, and service of the world's warships. For over 45 years, Warship has been the leading annual resource on the design, development, and deployment of the world's combat ships. Featuring a broad range of articles from a select panel of distinguished international contributors, Warship combines original research, new book reviews, warship notes, an image gallery, and much more, maintaining the impressive standards of scholarship and research with which the annual has become synonymous. Detailed and accurate information is the hallmark of all the articles, which are fully supported by plans, data tables, and stunning photographs. This year's Warship includes features on France's first destroyers, the turn-of-the-century 300-tonne type; Denmark's H-class submarines of World War II; Italy's proposed battlecruiser designs; the Imperial Japanese Navy's Chikuma-class protected cruisers; Soviet S-class submarines; and the first of a series on Imperial Germany's torpedo boats and destroyers., Warship is devoted to the design, development and service history of the world's combat ships. The contributors are respected authorities, so detailed and accurate information is the keynote of all the articles, which are fully supported by plans, data tables and photographs. The Reconstruction of the Battle Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy between the Wars: Part I, The ten Japanese dreadnoughts that survived the Washington Treaty were extensively rebuilt during the interwar period. In this, the first of a pair of articles, Hans Lengerer looks at the rationale for the reconstructions and describes the modernisation of the battlecruisers of the Kongo class. The 'Black Gang' The Development of Torpedo Boats in the Imperial German Navy: Part I, Dirk Nottelmann tells the story of the development of the German Torpedoboote, beginning with the spar torpedo-carrying boats of 1870 and ending in 1918 when, in addition to their 'classical' tasks, it was envisaged that they would replace the small cruiser as the primary scouting unit of the Imperial German Navy. The Royal Navy's 6in MK XXI Turret, Introduced in the Leander-class light cruisers in 1933, the Mark XXI turret, mounting two 6in Mark XXIII guns, became the benchmark for the modern British medium-calibre weapon systems used during the Second World War. Peter Cannon examines the design, construction and performance of one of the most successful and influential cruiser main armament systems of the mid-20th century. The Danish Submarines of the 'H' Class, The coastal submarines of the 'H' class were completed shortly before the Second World War. They saw no action due to Denmark's decision not to resist Nazi Germany's takeover in April 1940, and were scuttled in August 1943. Tom Wismann provides a study of this unusual and well-developed design. Russia's Battlecruiser Design Competition of 1911, In the summer of 1911, the Imperial Russian navy invited six Russian and 17 of the most prominent foreign shipbuilders to participate in a competition for the design of a powerful battlecruiser. Stephen McLaughlin describes the process that eventually led to the four ships of the Izmail class, which were laid down but never completed. The IJN Protected Cruisers of the Chikuma Class, The three protected cruisers of the Chikuma class were some of the first ships build for Japan to be powered by turbines instead of the traditional reciprocating engines. They were also among the first cruisers in the world to have a uniform main armament. Kathrin Milanovich provides a detailed study of this class, which served until the end of the 19210s. The 300-Tonnes: The First French Torpedo Boat Destroyer, The development of the torpedo boat destroyer in the British Royal navy and the French Marine Nationale followed different paths but resulted in ships with similar characteristics. John Jordan looks at the origins of the 300-tonne destroyers, 55 of which were completed for the French navy between 1899 and 1910 with a further 20 built for export. Italian Designs for Monitors and Battlecruisers During the Interwar Years, Michele Cosentino looks at some of the lesser-known interwar projects for capital ships proposed for the Regia Marina. The Beginnings of Soviet Naval Power: The Submarines of the 'S' Class, The 'S' class, designed and built with German assistance, is generally regarded as the best of the early Soviet submarine designs. Przemyslaw Budzbon tells the story of the fraught negotiations between the Soviets and the Germans that laid the basis for the design, and details its further development prior to and during the Second World War. The German Flak Ships Part II: The Ex-Dutch and Danish Hulls, In this sequel to their article published in Warship 2023, Aidan Dodson and Dirk Nottelmann outline the history of the final tour of eight planned state-of-the-art anti-aircraft batteries converted from old cruisers and coast defence ships during the Second World War. Warship Notes: HMS Agamemnon as, The 2025 edition of Warship , the celebrated annual publication featuring original research on the history, development, and service of the world's warships.
