It’s okay, but Citizen Kane and Casablanca have nothing to fear....
At age 8, my parents wouldn’t let me watch this movie on TV. But now I have my own copy! I can watch it as many times as I want!! (Once was enough. I mean, it’s passable, but not nearly what my imagination had promised me 60 years ago.) Not sorry I bought it. Not sorry I watched it. Probably won’t be watching it again (but I’ll hang onto it, just in case....)

Atlantis: The Lost Continent - Found
This movie is a vintage George Pal Production and one of the touch-point of my youth. I first watched it at the old "Savoy" movie theater in my hometown of Ferguson, MO in an era as different from today as the setting of this movie is from our so called "modern times". It combines Sci Fi with a tale of ancient times in a way similar to how Walt Disney's '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' combined a Jules Verne science fiction story about an advanced submarine with a sea adventure set in the late 1800s. In fact, 'Atlantis: The Lost Continent' also has advanced submarines (and a lot more high technology trappings) set in the time of Socrates and Plato. But there is so much more. The movie follows the travels and trials of an inexperienced young Greek fisherman, who has fallen in love with a haughty Atlantian princess after he rescues her from the aftermath of a ship wreak. His attempt to return her to her home leads him to Atlantis with all of its wonder (advanced technology) and its dark underside (savage slavery and perverted use of science to turn men into animals in order to serve the tyrannical state better). The main characters go through their own transformation as the fisherman matures into a formidable man and the princess begins to see the corruption of her own society through his eyes and eventually grows to love him. In the movie, Atlantis is in moral decline (think Roman Empire in its fading days) and its technological advances only seem to accelerate the process. Its end, in the final scenes of the movie, seems fitting. As in many of these George Pal films, the acting and writing is only fair to good, but the grand sweep of the film carries the viewer along. The special effects are vintage early 60s quality, but they work okay in this film. The society presented in the production is both familiar and bizarre, which lends it a weird sense of plausible reality. This one is an absolute necessity to complete your George Pal collection!

This Atlantis does not s(t)ink!
Saw this way back when I was a kid and have loved it ever since. In fact I've discovered that whenever I think of old Hercules and other "sword and sandal" movies, it turns out most of my memories come from the fun fantasy flick. What an imagination George Pal had! This film is not just torture and togas. There are submarines and beast-men and giant death-ray crystals and familiar-faced actors like Edward "Get Smart!" Platt as the proto-Christian priest who aids the young lovers escape the doomed island's cataclysmic demise. This DVD is MOD with no extras, not even a trailer, and may not be a perfect print, but it is still well worth watching. Reommended.

Atlantis
Everybody that loves old SciFi movies should love this one. The special effects are not up to today's standards, but it is still a very entertaining story.

Hidden Gem is best movie ever about Atlantis - by same director as War of the Worlds
This is a hidden gem among movies. I had this on VHS, and found that you could get this "on Demand" high quality DVD at a really reasonable price. Why pay more for a movie in person? Old, yes. Entertaining...…….Wow! I couldn't find the VHS, searched, couldn't remember exact title, googled "Atlantis". A site came up that said "Ten Best Movie's with Atlantis". This was the No. 1 pick. The guy writing that review was right! This is a classic that should be better known. Narration starts about how did technology that was similar arrive at different parts of the world at the same time. Then, the color movie begins with Princess Antillia getting lost at sea and comes across Greek fisherman Demetrios and his Dad. Recovered, she steals his fishing boat...……...and eventually they are found by an Atlantean submarine and taken to Atlantis. However, the Princess finds her father, the King, all but deposed and acting as a puppet. Demetrios is thrown into slavery, only regaining his freedom by the challenge of Fire and Water. The would be King convinces the Council to vividly declare War on the world, which they vividly do by stabbing knives in the table as they cry out "War!". Atlantis technology includes laser rays...……...but a volcanic eruption destroys Atlantis with our Princess and suitor escaping...…….and the tale wraps up nicely explaining how the survivors scattered to the four corners of the world bringing their knowledge. To add to how good this movie is, the same director, George Pal, who filmed "War of the Worlds" was the creator of this movie. This is the caliber of this little, entertaining gem. It is yours to purchase and enjoy.

Excellent Quality Film Sharp Picture and Good Mono Sound
Great DVD! The picture is sharp and fills the screen, and even though it is early 1960s mono, it is clear and crisp sound. Directed by George Pal, who also did Time Machine a year before Atlantis, and War of the Worlds in the 1950s, this film does not disapoint.

They don't make them like that anymore!
Colorful and loads of fun this grade A B movie has the added attraction of starring the princess of B scifi movies Joyce Taylor.

Atlantis myth visualized
Takes me back to those Saturday afternoon matinees at the neighborhood cinema. Fanciful and engaging. George Pal at his best.
