Equivalent to a 28-135mm lens, the new EF-S 17-85mm standard zoom lens from Canon brings true wide-angle to telephoto coverage to EOS 60D, EOS 7D and Digital Rebel cameras. It has Canon's Image Stabilization system, which allows safe hand-holding at speeds up to three stops slower than standard lenses. The lens is optically optimized for digital SLRs with a ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM) for fast, silent auto focus as well as full-time manual focus when in the AF mode. It has an aperture range of f/4.0-5.6 for a sharp image from edge to edge with a minimum of vignetting at the corners when wide open. High Distortion but “Sharp”
The EF-S 17-85 4-5.6 IS USM devalued its price greatly due to the fact that it has high reputation of providing distortion at every focal lengths vastly from -4.5 to +3.5!!!! Otherwise, it is a good lens, sharpness, build, IS, USM, size and its look, are perfect. Get one. It is cheap these days. You ll get nice pictures from it for sure. Excellent Zoom Range 17 to 85 MM
This particular lens is great to do Candid Photography. The range is Perfect.. The lens has a Terrible Downside,,, it is Not Durable at all.. Do, Expect,, for it to break,, and that you will purchase another because it has such a great range. This is my Favorite lens to use,, but it's Construction is,, Junk.. Durable sharp zoom w quick AF
17 to 85 is a great standard range. This lens has been around awhile, has a solid weight to it, is quite sharp with a respectable manual pull and has a super fast and accurate autofocus. I was surprised that the AF is a tiny bit noisier than I expected, but only an issue if you're using the in-camera mic for video, which you shouldn't be doing anyway. Variable aperture, but oh well, that's life under 200 dollars for a zoom this well built and with this range. The image stabilizer is very effective and helpful on handheld shots. Canon EF-S 17-85mm Lens
I have been using this lens since it was first introduced by Canon. I use it daily for work, and take it on every trip with the family. I Love The Canon EF-S 17-85!
This is a great lens - especially how it's priced on Ebay right now. The same lens has a rebate at B & H Photo and other very reputable Canon sellers. After rebate the price is $299. I paid less than half that on Ebay! Super for general walk around purposes. It's build quality is fine for non-pros like me. I was in a tough shooting situation yesterday and the USM was fast enough to capture my photo. No - it's super fast (f4) - but it's not a prime. So Far So Good
What I have on my camera (Rebel T3i) is a significant advance toward a professional optical device. In fact, I regret why I didn't buy a USM lens right at the time of buying my camera and I used to stick at the 18-55 mm kit lens. With the new lens, I'm feeling real photography. Sharper images, better low light performance, faster autofocus, 5x zoom capability all provide my camera to outperform comparing to non-USM lenses. Fantastic lens
I have never used a finer lens. Image is sharp, image stabilization is superb. I don't see any of the chromatic aberration or distortion problems other reviews of this lens have mentioned. Maybe that is because my camera, Canon 80D, mitigates those problems. EF-S 17-85 IS USM
I have found the perfect lens to leave on my SL1. This lens is light, the zoom is smooth, the IS works very well and my pictures are really sharp. There are some really good newer ef-s lenses like the 18-55 is stm, 18-135 is stm but I like this old lens better. The range is perfect for in the house and out in the yard. Happy to have bought it.
Bought it for my daughter whose EF-S 17-85 lens ceased working after many, many years of serious photo taking. It would have cost more to repair the old/inoperable one than to buy a replacement, so I shopped until I found one in the right condition at the right price and bought a used one for her on eBay.
