  • Interesting fathers take on how his son became evil

Ruthless is by most accounts a good read. It chronicles some of the key events in Ron Miscaviges life entering Scientology along with his family several decades ago. Ruthless also details the ultimate impact on his son David who rose to take control of a multimillion dollar tax free enterprise. While I would caution readers not familiar with the ins and outs of the controversial organization to bone up on Scientology a bit first, the book does outline the disappointment a parent can feel when a child goes rogue. Structurally Ruthless tends to jump around over the space of several decades making it at times a bit of a bear to stay on track. It manages to remain engaging in the matter of fact delivery of some horrible actions witnessed first hand as well as related to Ron by trusted associations. I do give the book high marks in that it is from personal recollections, although it does sometimes run at odds with documented facts and events, so again the caution remains. Ultimately though it does offer some interesting narrative on how a once oddball religionéself help scam has become a full on cult entity which more closely resembles life under a dictatorship in a foreign land than as a church professing to have the answers to lifes questions as created by a pulp fiction writer in the 1950`s.
