A fine restoration
This classic masterpiece speaks for itself, so the only thing that needs a comment is the 4K version.
I have seen both the DVD and Blu ray versions, and can say that without question this 4K version is the best. The rather excessive grain in the Blu ray edition is much improved here, where the overall tone and balance now give it a very clean and modern look. Although 4K is usually sold on the strength of its "oustanding" resolution, I find that this is not really the most important aspect. With B&W it is more a case of superior gradation (especially in shadow details) and fluidity that 4K offers which a direct comparison with the Blu ray make fairly obvious.
Is it worth the upgrade? The answer in the case of this exceptional film is yes. In addition you also get, for what it's worth, the TV remake for those who might be curious enough to watch it all the way through. You simply can't improve on the best!
