Synopsis
Hailed by NPR s Fresh Air as part Testament of Youth, part Dorothy Sayers, and part Upstairs, Downstairs, this astonishing debut has already won fans from coast to coast and is poised to add Maisie Dobbs to the ranks of literature s favorite sleuths.Maisie Dobbs isn t just any young housemaid. Through her own natural intelligence and the patronage of her benevolent employers she works her way into college at Cambridge. When World War I breaks out, Maisie goes to the front as a nurse. It is there that she learns that coincidences are meaningful and the truth elusive. After the War, Maisie sets up on her own as a private investigator. But her very first assignment, seemingly an ordinary infidelity case, soon reveals a much deeper, darker web of secrets, which will force Maisie to revisit the horrors of the Great War and the love she left behind.", Hailed by NPR's Fresh Air as part Testament of Youth , part Dorothy Sayers, and part Upstairs, Downstairs , this astonishing debut has already won fans from coast to coast and is poised to add Maisie Dobbs to the ranks of literature's favorite sleuths. Good transaction. I received this book in good time. It was nicely packaged (with several other books), so no damage to it while in transit. It is in good condition, and looks just as it was described and photographed in the listing. What more do you want in an eBay transaction? I’ve bought a few from this seller and wouldn't have any hesitation in buying from them again. Thank you!

Ordered Tuesday night. Shipped early Wednesday morning. Arrived on time Saturday morning by USPS Bound Printed Matter from TN to WI. It was packaged in a gray plastic shipping bag without cushioning. End of spine had minor shipping damage (see photos). It was the only noticeable condition issue on an otherwise very good used cookbook. Exceptional value. Good experience with a not-for-profit organization. Thanks!

Wow, pleasantly surprised to receive a brand new copy still in the shrink wrap, although it has a little bump on the top cover that goes through to several pages, makes no difference, as I got the book at a bargain price. Fast shipping, very happy with my purchase, I recommend this seller!

  • Interesting and Informative

It's a lovely series, and I wanted to read them in order. Doing so entailed serious shopping, but I can now do that. I'm midway through the first, and having a fine and wonderful time. Looking forward to re-reading the ones I've already read once all over again. The books are descriptive of the times and customs of the day and the place, the prose is excellent, interest is sustained. My intent is to share these books with those of my friends who may have an interest. I WOULD buy these again.

  • Lightweight with great features

I didn't have any expectations other than it was a 'investigative drama' . The recommendation was to read the Dobbs books in order. I see why as this first book spends a good deal of time providing background to the main character. There is a 'possible crime,' but it is secondary to building the character's profile.

  • First of Series

Book #1 of the Maisie Dobbs detective series..Anyone who enjoys a good mystery series will enjoy this book. A lot of character background that will be useful in future novels. Recommend highly!

  • The Marvelous Ms. Maisie Dobbs!

Terrific series! I’m on book 4 and looking forward to reading them all. If you love historical novels and enjoy mysteries these books are for you, I haven’t had so much fun since Agatha Christie.

  • Cleaver and compelling read

great writing, slows down a bit toward the end of the "middle." Overlay of psychology and sloothing interesting and well done.
