Hardboiled Eulogy
Somewhat forgotten in the years since, Farewell My Lovely is the final farewell for the detective of classic film noir. That it is THE quintessential detective Phillip Marlowe played by film noir stalwart Robert Mitchum adds bite, as does setting it in the summer of 1941, six months before Pearl Harbor would change everything.
The 1970s touches to the production gives the setting a rundown, sleazy quality. It's a good match for most of the characters, all of whom are in various stages of out of time. The two most memorable examples of this are Judith Davies' barely functional alcoholic Mrs. Florian, vainly using her pep to shove away the pain, and Jack O'Halloran's gentle voiced but single-minded thug Moose Malloy, chasing a dream girl no matter what kind of havoc he wrecks. Watching this in 2022, I connect with its "end of an era" vibe.
