Inspired casting and Walter Lang's deft direction breathe abundant life into WEEK-END IN HAVANA, in which a woman's trip to Cuba leads to romance, laughter, and sizzling songs. Nan Spencer (Alice Faye) has saved up for years for her vacation to Havana and is sorely disappointed when the cruise ship runs aground near Florida. While the other guests accept vouchers for another trip, Nan refuses because this was her only opportunity to get away. When she intimates that the failure with the ship was the captain's fault, the cruise company's vice president, Jay Williams (John Payne), personally accompanies Nan to Havana to avoid any more serious legal repercussions. Entrusted with ensuring that Nan will have a good time, Jay pays handsome ne'er-do-well Monte Blanca (Cesar Romero) to romance her. Meanwhile, Jay is forced to relieve Blanca of his own girlfriend singer, Rosita Rivas (Carmen Miranda), who decides Jay is a fine substitute for her romantic attentions. This wacky love quadrangle provides WEEK-END IN HAVANA with plenty of material for several boisterous song-and-dance routines. Musical screwball romantic comedy
This is great entertainment if you like Carmen Miranda and lightweight screwball comedy romance. John Payne, one of the most attractive yet underrated leading men in Hollywood, is engaged to his boss's daughter. Dad owns a cruise ship line. Shortly before the wedding, a cruise ship runs aground near Havana and is unable to dock there as planned. Dad sends Payne to handle the matter, but one of the passengers, Nan (Alice Faye) won't accept a cash payoff. She insists on a Cuban vacation or she will sue the cruise line. Payne has to stay in Havana and show Nan a good time, so he misses his own wedding and winds up pursued by three women: his fiancee, Nan, and nightclub singer Rosita (Carmen Miranda). For viewers who might be shocked when Payne bluntly asks Nan if she wants him to make love to her, this phrase did not mean the same thing in 1941 that it does today!
