Miriam Cooper is a Woman Worth Knowing About
Miriam Cooper is a fascinating woman and a terrific storyteller. Her story is an informative, funny, occasionally bitter, but ultimately rewarding one from someone who went through many ups and downs professionally and personally, and happily lived long enough to see renewed interest in her work.
Ms. Cooper pulls no punches as she details the positive and negative aspects of her entire life. She lived with her family in a slum, joined D.W. Griffith's impressive stable of collaborators, married the legendary Raoul Walsh, mingled with many of Hollywood's all-time greats, and raised two troubled sons. Her book is essential to anyone interested in silent movies, or cinema history period.
Reading her memories and looking at the beautiful pictures included, you'll undoubtedly want to see her in motion, only to be struck by the unfortunate realization that almost all of her movies are lost. But the ones that exist are great companion pieces to this book.
Miriam Cooper isn't as well-known today as many of her contemporaries, but that only makes it so much more rewarding to learn about her. Or rather, from her.
