Unique Story of Late War Experiences of Austrian Jewish Soldier on the Eastern Front
Fascinating soldier account of a quarter Jewish Austrian (who saw himself as a Jew) who is drafted in 1943, and after his training, served on the Eastern Front in Hitler's Army. Rauch is drafted when it's starting to look like the war is going against Germany, but seems duty bound to serve, and experiences the horrors of the war in Ukraine in 1943 and 1944. Portions of this account are his transcribed actual letters home, woven into his text. Rauch began the writing long after the war in 1984, and only after he had many friends read it, was he certain enough that it should be published in 2006. Rauch died four months after its publication.
