Gary Cooper plays Lou Gehrig, the first baseman for the Yanks who suffered from a crippling and incurable disease. Even when Gehrig was a student at Columbia University, the press had already pegged him as a top ballplayer. Soon the New York Yankees selected Gehrig for their lineup, and he became an overnight sensation on the baseball diamond. But this dedicated player--who had never missed a game once he stepped onto a Major League Baseball field--suddenly fell ill with a mysterious disease. As his body began to fail him, Gehrig had to say good-bye to the fans who idolized him and to the sport he loved so dearly. The film's final scene is a deeply moving portrait of human courage. Also not to be missed is Babe Ruth's cameo appearance as himself. Cooper's performance is outstanding, measuring up to the drama that surrounded the real-life events. THE PRIDE OF THE YANKEEES remains one of the greatest biopics ever filmed, in addition to being perhaps the best sports film of the 20th century.

    Salute to humility in the human spirit.

    This story of a great baseball player and a man who was given a crushing diagnosis for his health and wellbeing. This would be devastating to anyone to have such an awful life changing problem but has led to research into helping others with this disease. Also a reminder that health should never be taken for granted.

    One of the best baseball movies of all time

    This movie tells the story of Lou Gerhig, one of the best baseball movies of all time and a must have in your movie library! Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright are outstanding lead actors along with Walter Brennan and what a beautiful love story unfolds.A 5 star movie.

    A true story of the life of Lou Gehrig of baseball game. The acting is incredible with Gary Cooper as Gehrig, and the sweet actress Theresa Wright as his adoring wife. This film made by, for, and of the greatest generation, recalls a time when heroism was more common place, with heroes that were just common ordinary people. Keep tissues handy, and be transported to a simpler time.
